How Small Hotels Can Increase Revenue Without Raising Occupancy

There is a question I hear often in the hospitality industry:

“How can I increase my hotel’s revenue when I can’t increase my occupancy?”

It is a very reasonable question.

A small hotel has a physical limit. If you operate a 30-room property, you cannot suddenly turn it into a 60-room hotel because demand is strong. And if you already have limited space, adding more rooms may require a major investment.

But there is another way to look at the problem.

Instead of asking:

“How do I get more guests?”

hotel owners should sometimes ask:

“How can I generate more revenue from the guests and rooms I already have?”

This is one of the fundamental ideas behind hotel revenue management.

You do not always need more rooms.

You do not always need dramatically higher occupancy.
