When Farhan Akhtar decided to remake Amitabh Bachchan’s *Don*, Shah Rukh Khan was not his initial choice for the lead role.
In a recent interview, Farhan disclosed that Hrithik Roshan was his first consideration for the film before he even began writing the script. Farhan explained that he was still dealing with the box office disappointment of *Lakshya* when the idea of remaking *Don* emerged, and Hrithik was his first contact.
Farhan shared on Raj Shamani’s podcast, “I reached out to Hrithik and mentioned my plans to remake *Don*. He responded positively, saying it sounded amazing. I told him I would write the script and bring it to him. However, as I wrote, Shah Rukh Khan’s face kept coming to mind. I felt his ‘personality, wit, and sarcastic humor’ made him the ideal choice for the role.”
He continued, “As I was writing, it became clear to me that Shah Rukh was the perfect actor for the part. But since I had already discussed the role with Hrithik, I decided to consult him again. I told him I was increasingly inclined to cast Shah Rukh. Hrithik responded graciously, saying I should make the film as I envisioned it and not worry about him. He encouraged me to reach out to Shah Rukh if I felt he was the right choice.” Hrithik Roshan later made a cameo in *Don 2* (2011), which also featured Shah Rukh Khan.
Regarding Shah Rukh Khan’s stardom, Farhan described him as an “exceptionally charming and knowledgeable” person who reads extensively. “He can discuss any topic with a distinct viewpoint. He’s a good listener, well-read, and genuinely interested in people. His curiosity and adventurous spirit make him enjoyable to be around. He has a natural charm that’s magnetic both on and off-screen, and his effortless demeanor makes others feel at ease. His hard work has been key to his success.”
Farhan Akhtar is currently working on *Don 3* with Ranveer Singh.
